Sensory hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human sensory facial hair. The hair shaft (grey) is anchored in a hair follicle beneath the surface of the skin. Surrounding the follicle are many nerve endings that are sensitive to pressure. Hair is made up of dead tissue. The outer layer of the hair, the cuticle, is covered in overlapping scales that prevent the hair's central cortex, which is made up of the fibrous protein keratin.
