Feather. A bird's feather of the down type, a feather which occurs as underplumage serving as insulation to maintain body warmth. The feather has a central axis or rachis which bears the flat vane of the feather made up of many slender barbs. Feathers give a bird the ability to fly, provide insulation, waterproofing, camouflage, and the colours or shapes for attracting mates.
