Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cell of the human anterior pituitary gland (adenohypophysis) showing the secretion of gonadotrophic hormones (gonadotrophins). The cell nucleus at bottom left is coloured orange: circular "packets" of hormone in the surrounding cytoplasm are coloured dark pink. The group of gonadotrophins includes any hormones synthesised & secreted by the pituitary that act on the sex organs to produce sex hormones and sperm or ova. Important examples include follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. Magnification: x7,000 at 6x7cm size.
