Caption: Adrenal gland. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the cellular structure of the zona reticularis region of the adrenal gland. The zona reticularis is the inner zone of the adrenal cortex. It consists of an irregular network of branching cords of glandular cells (grey) with wide intercellular spaces called sinusoids. The cells have microvilli (hair-like) extensions; it is thought these cells secrete sex hormones and may store hormones produced in the zona fasciculata of the adrenal gland. Blood flows through the sinusoids and hormones are secreted directly into the blood. Magnification: x1,350 at 6x7cm size. x1,830 at 4x5".
