Caption: Thyroid hormone secretion. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the secretion of thyroid hormones from thyroid tissue. Thyroglobulin (orange), a glycoprotein, is a large precursor molecule from which two thyroid hormones are synthesized. These hormones enter the capillary network (blue) and circulate throughout the bloodstream. The thyroid gland is situated in the base of the neck. The iodine-containing thyroid hormones are released following stimulation by hormones from the pituitary gland. They regulate metabolism and growth. Magnification: x3900 at 6x9cm size.
