Caption: Three-dimensional visualisation reconstructed from scanned human data of the endocrine system. Featured are the pineal gland, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands. The thyroid gland produces two hormones, tri-iodothyronine (T3) and tetra-iodothyronine (T4), which regulate basal metabolic rate and blood calcium levels respectively. The thyroid works in conjunction with the parathyroids which are embedded on the posterior aspect of the gland. The four small parathyroid glands produce calcitonin which lowers blood calcium levels by inhibiting the rate of decalcification.
