This colour enhanced cross sectional CT image of the neck shows the appearance of a normal thyroid gland (light blue). The gland has a right and left lobe which surround the air filled trachea (round black density in the center of the image). On either side of the thyroid gland are the carotid arteries(red) and the internal jugular veins (blue, right is larger than the left = normal variant). The right jugular vein is on your left. The spinal column and ribs at the 1st thoracic level are also seen.
