False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human adipocytes, or cells adapted for the storage of fat. This clump of fat cells is lying on a mass of erythrocytes or red blood cells. Stored fat accumulates in a cell as lipid droplets, which fuse to form a single large droplet, displacing the nucleus to one side & reducing the cytoplasm to a thin rim around the periphery. Most connective tissue contains adipocytes. Fat cells serve as insulation and as an energy store. Magnification: X 250 at 35mm, & X 500 at 6X7cm size.
