Caption: Easter Islander. Engraved portrait of a native Easter Islander, published in 1777 in a book recounting the voyages of Captain James Cook. Easter Island is in the South Pacific and was first reached by Europeans in 1722. On the island stand huge statues and stone houses erected by neolithic people. Cook sailed there in 1772.
