Native of Christmas Sound, Tierra del Fuego. Captain James Cook's second voyage, from 1772 to 1775, was a search for the legendary southern continent. His ship, HMS Resolution, visited a number of islands. Amongst these were Tiera del Fuego off the tip of South America, where William Hodges, the voyage's artist, drew this portrait of a male resident of Christmas Sound. Published in 1777.
