Caption: Reindeer racing, Russian Lapland. The reindeer are being raced as part of the traditional Reindeer Breeder Day celebrations. These are Nentsi reindeer, herded by the Nentsi people (also called the Nenets people). The racing is taking place at Gydy village, the Gydy Peninsula, in the Tjumen region of the Russian Far North. Reindeer are a central part of the life of the indigenous people of Lapland, an area that extends across northern Scandinavia and north-western Russia. Reindeer are herded and bred for their meat, hide and milk, and are also used for transport. Photographed on 5 May 2006.
