Caption: Markree Observatory, County Sligo, Ireland. This observatory was built at Markree Castle by Colonel Edward Joshua Cooper (1798-1863) after inheriting the castle from his father in 1830. It was said to be the most richly furnished private observatory at the time. At left is a Stevenson screen, invented in 1864 and in use from the late 1860s onwards. The telescope partially seen in the background is the 13-inch Cauchoix objective, located within a 16-foot circular wall with no roof or dome.
