Caption: Amateur astronomer. View of an amateur astronomer looking at a planetary conjunction. There is also a reflecting telescope pointed at the planets. A crescent moon is visible at lower right. The conjunction (upper left) is of the planets Venus (bright, furthest right), Jupiter (less bright, furthest left) and Mars (dim, right of Jupiter). Conjunctions occur when several planets are all in the same line of sight from Earth. Conjunctions between two or three planets are fairly common, but those involving more may only happen once in a lifetime.
