Caption: WIYN telescope. Technician does maintenance on the active optics system of the WIYN (Wisconsin, Indiana, Yale, NOAO) telescope at the Kitt Peak observatory in Arizona, USA. The system's 66 actuators push or pull on the rear face of the WIYN's 3.5-metre flexible primary mirror to compensate for distortions. The mirror can slightly change shape if it is positioned at different angles or if there are any temperature differences. These distortions can affect the image quality obtainable. The WIYN was completed in 1973.
