Milky Way over Keck telescope. Telescope domes on the dormant volcano Mauna Kea, Hawaii, under the stars of the Milky Way galaxy. The large dome hou- ses Keck-1, the world's largest optical telescope. The smaller dome houses NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility. The brightest stars overhead are part of the tail of the constellation Scorpius. Just above Keck-1's dome is the M7 open star cluster. Mauna Kea's clear skies and high altitude make it one of the world's best sites for astronomical observa- tions. This photograph is a composite of a picture of the two telescopes and a picture of the Milky Way photographed in the southern hemisphere.
