Caption: Swope telescope. Dome of the Henrietta Swope one metre (40 inch) telescope at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington (OCIW) site at Las Campanas, Chile. Supernova SN 1987A's discovery was confirmed using this telescope. The Swope telescope is used to make observations at optical and infrared wavelengths. The domes in the background contain (nearest to furthest): the university of Toronto 60-centimetre telescope (at right), the University of Warsaw 1.2 metre (m) telescope, and the du Pont 2.5m telescope. The high altitude (2300 metres) of Las Campanas, and the clear air, make the site an ideal location for astronomical observations.
