Caption: La Silla 3.6-metre telescope. Technician prepares the 3.6-metre telescope at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) site at La Silla, Chile. He is at the base of the telescope, charging its Charge- Coupled Device (CCD) camera with liquid gas. The liquid gas cools the CCD and improves its sensitivity to incoming light. The 3.6-metre telescope is the largest optical device at La Silla. Photographed in 1997.
