Part of the optical telescope is seen inside. This telescope consists of a spherical primary mirror with a diameter of 1.8 metres and an achromatic correcting lens of 1.2 metres (50 inches). Schmidt telescopes are virtually free from light aberrations and are characterised by a large observational field. UKST covers about 40 square degrees of sky. It is mainly used for systematic sky surveys. It is operated by the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, Scotland.
