Caption: View of the heliostat of the McMath solar telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona. Largest its kind in the world, the telescope's tower stands 110 feet (33. 5 metres) high. The 60-inch (1.5m) image-forming heliostat - or tracking mirror - reflects the Sun's image down a diagonal 500- foot (152m) path inside the telescope. Some 300 feet (91. 5m) underground, a paraboloidal mirror beams the image to the observing room where astronomers study the Sun's magnetic fields, motions and composition.
