Caption: View of the tracking mirror of the McMath solar telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. Largest of its kind in the world, the telescope's tower stands 110 feet (33.5 m) high. The 60-inch (1.5-m) image-forming tracking mirror seen at the top of the tower reflects the Sun's image down a diagonal 500-foot (152 m) path inside the telescope. Some 300 feet (91 m) underground, a paraboloidal mirror beams the image back up to the observing room, where astronomers can study it.
