Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the sweet alyssum flower, (family: Cruciferae) showing fo outer petals (corolla) surrounding the male & female reproductive parts. The central body is the female carpel; at its free end is the stigma, a spherical mass covered in finger-like projections that receives pollen grains that carry the male gamete. The stigma is connected to the ovary (housing female gamete) at its base by a short stalk (the style). Surrounding the carpel are 6 stamens, the male organs, each comprised of an upper anther (the pollen bearing organ), supported by a stalk-like filament. Magnification: X 14 at 35mm size.
