Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of farina glands on the surface of a sepal of the primula flower, Primula malacoides. The plant, which is native to China, is noted for its stalked leaf hairs, or trichomes, which secrete a flour- like white substance called farina. The trichomes occur on the flower stalk, buds, petals, & sepals. The waxy secretion insulates the plant from the cold & is a water repellant which prevents condensation that would otherwise block the stomata, or gas exchange pores, between the trichomes. Stomata are visible here on the sepal surface. Magnification: x115 at 35mm size. Green tint ("leech"). Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 4.16, page 75.
