Caption: FUDD SETI device. The FUDD (Follow-up detection device), part of the equipment at the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) institute. FUDD is used by SETI's Project Phoenix, SETI's largest project. Project Phoenix utilises radio telescopes from around the world to gather radio signals from the vicinity of sun-like stars. The researchers on Project Phoenix use computers and their own judgement to see if any of these signals originate from intelligent civilisations. The FUDD device allows the immediate processing of data received from the radio telescopes. This immediately frees the telescopes to scan other areas.
