Caption: THEMIS satellites launch, February 17th 2007. Delta II rocket launching the THEMIS satellites from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA. THEMIS is an acronym for Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms. The mission consists of five identical probes that will study violent energy releases (substorms) that occur in the Earth's magnetosphere. The mission aims to identify the cause of these events, which intensify aurorae near the Earth's poles.
