Caption: THEMIS satellites launch, February 17th 2007. Delta II rocket launching the THEMIS satellites from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA. THEMIS is an acronym for Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms. The mission consists of five indentical probes that will study violent and energy releases (substorms) that occur in the Earth's magnetosphere. The mission aims to identify the cause of these events, which intensify the auroras near the Earth's poles.
