Caption: The 2. 4 metre Space Telescope primary mirror during the initial grinding phase of its fabrication by the Perkin-Elmer Corporation. Perkin-Elmer optical engineers are shown checking the curvature of the mirror with a spherometer, prior to its final polishing and subsequent coating. The 'eggcrate' structure of the mirror core is emphasised in this view.
