Caption: Pansy petal. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a pansy flower petal (Viola tricolor). The petal is covered in tiny epidermal hairs known as trichomes. The petals of insect- pollinated plants are usually brightly- coloured and are often scented. A pollen grain (centre left) from an unidentified plant is also seen. Pollen contains a plant's male sex cells. Magnification: x420 at 6x7cm size.
