Caption: Hubble Telescope servicing. Astronaut performs an ExtraVehicular Activity (EVA or "spacewalk") during a space shuttle mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The astronaut is working near the foot restraint of the robotic arm (the Remote Manipulator System or RMS) that was used to capture the HST from orbit. Photograph of Steven Smith in the cargo bay of the Discovery shuttle during mission STS-82 (11-21 February 1997). This mission was the second to service the HST since its launch in 1990. During the servicing, improved instruments were added and some aging components were replaced. The shuttle also lifted the HST into a slightly higher orbit.
