Caption: Astronomers at work in the control room of the Einstein Observatory X-ray astronomy satellite at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The pair of Einstein Observatory images on the computer screen at left are of the Crab Nebula, a supernova remnant. They show the Crab with its central pulsar (white spot) in its "on" phase (left) & its "off" phase (right). The pulsar flashes 30 times a second. The Einstein Observatory, originally designated HEAO- 2, was launched into space in 1978.
