Caption: XMM-Newton telescope mirror. Technician with one of the gold-plated mirrors used in the European Space Agency's (ESA's) X-ray Multi-Mirror telescope (XMM) satellite. 58 of these mirrors, of varying sizes, were constructed for the satellite's three telescopes. The mirrors were made by the Media Lario company in Italy, and are only a millimetre thick. The XMM telescopes were built and tested from March 1997 to September 1999, and are designed to study high-energy phenomena such as supernovae and black holes. The satellite was successfully launched in December 1999. The original mission lifetime of two years was later extended to 2010.
