Caption: Artist's impression of NASA's Magellan spacecraft performing its survey of the planet Venus. Magellan was launched from the space shuttle in May 1989 for a 15-month expedition to Venus, to map the surface of the planet. Once in Venetian orbit, Magellan will use a novel radar system to penetrate the dense clouds of gas that envelop the planet and provide photographic images of the surface. Magellan was built for NASA by the Martin Marietta Corporation, Denver, Colorado, USA.
