Caption: Demonstration of magnetic deflection using one of the new high-temperature ceramic superconductors. Discovered in 1986, the new superconducting ceramics are expected to lead to a technological revolution & are the subject of intensive worldwide research. Superconductors lose all of their electrical resistance when cooled below a certain threshold temperature. The photograph shows a nitogen-cooled pellet of the superconducting ceramic, suspended from a length of thread, being deflected by a permanent magnet.
