Caption: Phoenix lander (blue) on Mars, satellite image. The Phoenix spacecraft was launched on 4th August 2007, and landed on Mars on 25th May 2008. Phoenix is the first successful landing in a polar region of Mars, and is the sixth successful Mars landing. The mission's aim is to research the history of water on Mars and to evaluate the environment for evidence of microbial life on the planet. This image, taken soon after the landing, was obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft.
