Caption: Soviet lunar exploration craft Zond 5, being taken onboard the ship Vasilli Golovnin in Russia, 1968. Zond 5 was intended to be a precursor for Soviet manned Moon missions. It carried a biological cargo - including turtles, mealworms and bacteria - into orbit around the Moon, passing within 2000 kilometres of its surface. On September 21 1968 the craft splashed down in the Indian Ocean, with its livestock largely healthy.
