Caption: Explosion of planet Faeton. Artwork showing the explosion of Faeton, one of the mythical planets of the Solar System. In certain fictional accounts Faeton was described as having its orbit between those of Mars and Jupiter. Around 65 million years ago the planet is said to have been hit by an asteroid causing it to explode, giving rise to the asteroid belt. One fragment from the explosion hit the Earth, and the impact resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs. Faeton had four moons, seen at the corners of this illustration.
