Caption: Carpel and stamens. Macrophotograph of a flower of the Minerva variety of Hippeastrum sp. showing its stamens and carpel. Each stamen (male reproductive part) consists of a pollen-bearing anther (yellow) on the end of a stalk-like filament. The carpel (at lower centre) is fertilized by pollen which lands on its tip (stigma) and travels down its slender style. In temperate climates, Hippeastrum sp. must be grown in warm sheltered conditions.
