Tektite from meteorite impact. Tektites are glassy rocks formed under the immense heat and pressure of a meteorite impact. The material is ejected from the impact site and cools and solidifies as it passes through the air or impacts water or the ground. This accounts for the various shapes and forms of tektites, such as the elongated shape seen here. This tektite is of a type known as Australasite, named after the original type found in Australia, and was found near Guang Dang, China. It is 10.5 centimetres long.
