Caption: Rock from meteorite impact crater. This rock is a fragment of a shatter cone, a rare rock type that is only found in the bedrock beneath large meteorite impact craters. Shatter cones are conical in shape, with thin grooves (striae) that radiate from the tip (apex) of the cone. The cones' tips point towards the site of impact, with the striae radiating away from it. They can range from 2.5 centimetres to several meters in length. This sample is from the Nordlinger Ries impact crater in Germany, which is believed to have formed about 14.3 to 14.5 million years ago in the Miocene Epoch.
