Caption: Maize flowers. Male flowers of the maize plant (Zea mays). Yellow dusty pollen is seen on the leaves beneath the flowers. Pollen grains are the male sexual spores of a plant. Male maize flowers release countless millions of tiny grains, which are dispersed by the wind. Some inevitably reach female flowers, where they fertilise the ovules (eggs) to form seeds. Maize (or corn) is a crop grown throughout the world in warm regions. It yields oil and fibres, as well as its cobs, which are known as sweetcorn.
