Caption: Mariner 10 photograph of Mercury, the innermost planet, showing its heavily cratered surface. Mariner 10 was the first spaceprobe to visit the planet, making three separate encounters during 1974-5. This image is a mosaic constructed from photographs taken during the spacecraft's second fly-by on 21 September, 1974. It shows the southern hemisphere in orthographic projection and centred at -55 degrees latitude and 100 degrees longitude.
