Caption: Codonopsis flower. Macrophotograph of the carpel of a Codonopsis clematidea flower. This is the female part of the flower. This flower self- pollinates. Five paired pollen bundles (pale yellow) are seen attached to the tip (stigma) of the carpel. The anthers which bore this pollen bent up towards the stigma, deposited the pollen there and bent away. The five stamens which bore the anthers are seen radiating out from the base of the style (the long stalk of the carpel). Two empty anthers are seen on the stamens at bottom and top left. Magnification: x2 at 35mm size.
