Caption: Red hot poker anthers. Macrophotograph of flowers of the red hot poker plant (Kniphofia uvaria, formerly Tritoma uvaria), showing the anthers. This perennial plant, also known as the torch lily, bears orange-red flowers in summer. The male anthers (yellow) which bear the pollen are seen. The pollen contains the male gametes, which fertilise the female ovules to produce seeds. The plant is a native of South Africa but was introduced to Europe as an ornamental in 1747. Photographed in Santa Barbara, California, USA. Magnification: x1 at 6x9cm size.
