Caption: Tiger lily. Macrophotograph of a flower of the tiger lily (Lilium pardalinum) showing its reproductive parts. One of the male stamens is at lower centre. This structure comprises a pollen- bearing anther (red/brown) attached to a long filament (white). Pollen grains are the male sex cells of the plant. The female part of the flower, the carpel, is at upper centre (deep red). If a pollen grain lands on its tip (stigma, red), it burrows down through its supporting style (white) to reach the ovary, where it fertilises an ovum. Magnification: x1.3 at 35mm size.
