Caption: Wild strawberry stamens. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the stamens of the flower of a wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca), showing pollen grains (yellow). The stamens are male reproductive structures that consist of a filament topped by a pollen-bearing anther. They surround the female part of the flower, which consists of a style topped by a sticky tip (stigma), not seen. Pollen grains, the male sex cells of a flowering plant, land on the stigmas and burrow down through the styles to the ovary, where they fertilise the ova (eggs).
