Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph of the reproductive structures of the chickweed flower Stellaria media (a self pollinating plant). On the outside of the capsule are 3 stamens (stalklike) topped by the pollen-bearing anthers (male organ). Emerging from the capsule (carpel) are the styles capped by the fingerlike projections of the stigmas, the female structures for receiving pollen. Adhering to the stigmas are pollen grains, which have swollen & are germinating. The germination tube grows down the style & into the ovaries at the base of the capsule where it releases the sperm (gametes) for fertilization with the eggs (ova). Mag: X14 at 35mm size. Original is bw print B785/004.
