Caption: Melon flower pistil. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a melon flower (Cucumis melo) pistil. This is the female reproductive structure, composed of one or more carpels. Each carpel possesses a stigma, style and an ovary (not seen). The ovules in the ovary are fertilised by the male sex cells. Each carpel may then ripen to produce a fruit containing seeds. Magnification: x140 at 6x7cm size.
