Caption: Heath flower cluster. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cluster of flowers from a heath plant (Erica sp.). One of them (lower right) has partially opened to reveal part of its carpel (or pistil, red spike) and the tops of its anthers (brown, surrounding the carpel). The carpel is the female reproductive structure. Its style (the tall spike) supports the stigma at its tip. The stigma receives pollen that contains male sex cells that are carried to the female sex cells in the ovary (not seen) at the base of the carpel. The anthers (part of the male reproductive structures) produce pollen. Magnification: x7 at 6x7cm size.
