Caption: Fennel flower cluster. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a view from above of a cluster of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) flowers. These have five-fold symmetry, with the five petals (green) alternating with five anthers (brown). The flowers also vary from open (far right) to closed (lower left). The uncoiled anthers are supported by their filaments (green stalks). Together, the filament and anther make up a stamen, the male reproductive part of a flowering plant. The anthers produce the pollen containing the male sex cells. The female reproductive part (pistil) is clearly divided into two carpels (green) at the centre of each flower. Magnification: x8 at 6x7cm size.
