Caption: Unusual lava flow on Mars. Image gathered by the Viking Orbiter 2 spacecraft of an unusual lava flow on Mars. The flow feature lies on the flank of Alba Patera, a volcano in the northern hemisphere of Mars. The flow has been described by NASA scientists as resembling 'Kermit the Frog', a character in the children's TV programme, 'The Muppets'. In addition to the general outline of the flow, a small impact crater forms Kermit's 'eye'. The data for the image were gathered in 1979, but were only released by NASA on 6 February 1985.
