Caption: Pumpkin flower pistil. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a pumpkin (Cucurbita sp.) flower pistil. A pistil is the female reproductive structure, composed of one or more carpels. Each carpel possesses a stigma, style and an ovary (not seen). The ovules in the ovary are fertilised by the male sex cells. Each carpel may then ripen to produce a seed bearing fruit. Magnification: x100 at 6x7cm size.
